Below is a list of suggestions as to how you, as parents, can help your child succeed in instrumental music, even if you never played an instrument yourself. Please contact me if you would like additional information!
- Show interest in what your student is studying
- Give praise and encouragement
- Arrange a regular time for practice - 15 to 30 minutes a day is better than longer amounts of time every few days
- Help keep a daily record of practice time (practice logs provided by director)
- Find a quiet place for your child to practice without interruptions
- Help and support practice
- Never make fun of strange sounds made in the beginning
- Provide a safe place to keep the instrument
- Keep the instrument in good repair
- Teach your student to be on time for lessons and rehearsals
- Encourage your student to play for others
- Provide an adjustable height music stand, good quality instrument, and proper equipment (reeds, neck strap)
Classroom Expectations:
* Students need to enter the classroom in a
manner that is respectful to their peers and band instruments.
* Students need to arrive and be prepared to
begin rehearsal on time.
(8:10am - 5th Grade arrive 8:15am rehearsal; 3:05
Middle School arrive, 3:07pm rehearsal)
* Students need to bring all appropriate
materials to class: Sharpened Pencil, Music Folder, Lesson Book,
Properly working instrument (includes reeds, cleaning cloths,
valve/ slide oil, neck strap, etc.)
* Students need to be respectful listeners
when the director is on the podium. (no talking or playing
instruments)
* Students need to use appropriate posture
when playing their instrument.
* Students need to come to band ready to
learn! This is a positively productive learning environment!
If a student chooses not to follow the
expectations:
1st Offense - Verbal Warning
2nd Offense - Verbal Warning, Contact Parents and
Referral
3rd Offense - Students will sit out the remainder
of class and receive a referral.
4th Offense - Students will be directed to the
office immediately and parents will be contacted.
(Depending on the severity of the broken rule, a
student may be directly sent to the office.)
Instrument Rental Information: Mrs. Spear has handouts from
a couple music dealers in the area. If you are looking to rent and
instrument or upgrade your student's current band instrument, please let
her know!
Questions to ask your music dealer...
1. What brand is the instrument?
2. Is there an insurance program and what does it cover / cost?
3. Do they have an instrument upgrade / "step-up" horn program?
What are the details? Time lines?
4. Are loaner horns available should the one we are renting need
repairs?
St. Francis of Assisi offers band for
students beginning in grade five. Band is not in the St. Francis
School general budget and parents must pay for instruction. Band
fees and tuition pay for private lessons and a large group band
experience. Solo and ensemble opportunities are also available for
band students. Private lessons are offered weekly during the
school day and large group rehearsal is before school. Students
involved in band are held to curricular standards and benchmarks. Band
is an intellectual and artistic activity as evidenced by placement of
instruction during the academic day.
