According to Iowa Department of
Education Code 257.44 Gifted and talented children defined,
“Gifted and talented” children are those identified as
possessing outstanding abilities who are capable of high
performance. Gifted and talented children are children who
require appropriate instruction and educational services
commensurate with their abilities and needs beyond those
provided by the regular school program. Gifted and
talented children include those children with demonstrated
achievement or potential ability, or both, in any of the
following areas or in combination:
1.
General intellectual ability
2.
Creative thinking
3.
Leadership ability
4.
Visual and performing arts ability
5.
Specific ability aptitude
The identification of students as
“gifted” at St. Francis is done for the purposes of
instructional support—not permanent labeling. The basis for
support is the student’s relative need for a program which
goes beyond the regular curriculum. Students will be
identified on the basis of a varied combination of the
following:
> 93% or above on ITBS in multiple or specific
subject areas
> Advanced proficiency rating on other
standardized test (ability, creativity, aptitude, etc.)
> Evidence of gifted characteristic traits as
reported by teacher observation
> Student products / portfolio / performances
> Admission to special groups or programs
because of exceptional talent
> Teacher recommendation
> Parent recommendation
> Administration recommendation
If a student is deemed in need of
gifted support services, the classroom teachers,
administration and Enrichment teacher will work together in
communication with the parents to create a plan to meet
those needs. This may include but is not limited to:
* Differentiation in the classroom
* Curriculum modification or substitution
* Regular sessions with other high ability
students
* Acceleration in a subject area
* Out of school experiences
* Participation in specific programs related to
area of giftedness
Services are reviewed on an on-going
basis and adjusted as necessary.
